Cognitive Development: Cognitive Article/Issue
The Natural News Website contains an article by Lynn Barry entitled, "Television May be Doing Your Thinking." The article discusses how watching television is similar to hypnotizing. Television relaxes the viewer in such a way, that the viewer shuts off the analytical side of the brain. When people are watching television they do not think about the information they are viewing. The article suggests that a child's cognitive development might suffer as the frontal lobe of the brain is affected by television viewing. When people make a switch from being critical to be relaxed, the frontal lobe of the brain switches off. Hence, when people watch television, they are not using the frontal lobe of the brain. So when children are viewing television their frontal lobe shuts off, it doesn't get used, and hence it doesn't get a chance to develop. Television viewing causes problems in others areas of development as well: socially, physically, and linguistically etc. The article doesn't say it is the content of the shows, the problem is the medium TV is presented in.
